I returned to band birds off the southern shore of Nova Scotia for the fall of 2008

The wharf

Prairie Warbler

Warbling Vireo

Ovenbird

The house at the southern end of the island

Sunset over the ocean

One of the ponds on Bon Portage

A small freshwater pond

Salt Water Pond, on the northern tip of the island

The middle of the southern half of the island has been hit hard by insects and fire

A Swamp Sparrow patiently awaits extraction from the mist net

Though most of the tree cover is quite stunted, there are a few very large trees scattered over the island

Lying very low, with little change in elevation, much of the island's interior is extremely wet.

There was an incredible variety of mosses and other aquatic plants

I probably took 30 pictures of this area!

With a good pair of rubber boots, walking through this kind of habitat is quite fun

The moss diversity was incredible

The southern tip of the island

From the southern tip, looking north

Common Yellowthroat

The buildings of at the southern end

The lighthouse

Salt Water pond, on the northern end

Saltwater pond, with the mainland of Nova Scotia visible in the background

The northern end

Spider web in the mist

Some of the dying alders and viburnums are so covered with spider webs you can hardly see past them!

The wharf at low tide

Leach's Storm-petrel

The "boardwalk" through the net lanes

Hurricane Kyle

The trail to the west side

The Graveyard, twisted balls of rope and smashed lobster traps collect on the southwestern shore

The day after the hurricane there were hundreds and hundreds of gulls around the island

The wharf

One of the nets in "the burn", a treeless pocket of shrubs

Looking north toward the mainland

The boathouse and the ever-sagging clothesline

The buildings at the southern end.

This little guy was sitting beside the trail one day as we were checking nets

Low tide reveals mats of rockweed covering all the rocks.

The Eider, the small boat used to run supplies and people to and from the mainland

Taking the outboard across the channel to the mainland

Lucas pulling a bird out of the band to band, while Ingrid scribes

Hairy Woodpecker.  Ingrid's fingers were quite bloodied after extracting this guy.  Apparently he didn't like being handled...

Sunset over the west trail

I went hiking in Cape Chignecto on the way home

Fall foliage in Cape Chignecto

The rocky shoreline of the Bay of Fundy

I camped near Amherst, Nova Scotia and woke up to this incredible sunrise

Marshes and farms in the light of a new day

The boardwalk at the Sackville Waterfowl Park

The leaves of the Birches.  There was not alot of colour change on the island, so the colours on the drive home were quite enjoyed
